Finally a reason to dress for dinner (in LA)

Living in Los Angeles leaves something to be desired
in the "reason to dress up" department, that is until last
Thursday. Matt and I were joining his dear friend Edwin Seth
Brown for dinner at a new restaurant he had discovered downtown.
Having never eaten downtown I quickly packed a bag and gathered
my passport, because this sounded like quite the ordeal.
I was pleasantly surprised if not shocked when only 20 minutes later
we were valeting the car and walking into what felt like backstage at
Olympus Fashion Week, fierce looks and high energy. The service was
brilliant and they had Moet White Star by the glass, thats enough to make
me want to come back. We ordered several dishes and did it family style,
so we all enjoyed a taste of everything. Finished off with a home made
almond gelato and a breeze through the gourmet market to take a few tastes
home! So if your looking for a great (and affordable) reason to pull out some
fashions and have a night on the (down)town check out Bottega Louie

A little too workout for the weekend.

Ok so I'm a huge fan of the environment and being green and what not. I just happen to feel like it should still work with your look. So thanks to a gift from my sister I am rocking this chic water bottle from Crate and Barrel, it looks like a normal plastic one however it is made of sturdy glass! So save your Camelback for the gym, and run around town toting your "green" water bottle, looking good while doing good.

Self Medicating

Do you ever just need to get out of town? Sometimes a girl as just got to kick up her heels and float in a pool for a few days! That is exactly what I just did this weekend, and let me tell you it was worth a year of therapy. Im talking about self medicating child! I hear it all day, people are over-scheduled  and just cant find the time to stop it all for a moment. These days what happens is our bodies do it for us by making us feel sick or exhausted. Well my point of this post is to challenge you to self medicate and get out of your life for a weekend. Yes that means away and disconnected, out of the office reply for your life for an entire weekend.  Sometimes it seems to me if my blackberry would tell me to breath deeply... I would. So pick up a magazine about summer getaways and pick out your Self Medicating destination. I recommend a quite pool or a cabin in the woods, but whatever suits your tastes is fabulous. The goal here is to totally disconnect from your routine for a weekend, sounds easy but its not. For me the reward is totally worth the sacrifice. I am back to life looking at things through freshly cleaned glasses, and I love allot of what I see and know that some other things could use a tweak. So put down the Ambien  take on my Self Medicating Challenge for a weekend soon, and leave some comments a maybe even send me a picture of your relaxing bliss!

Grey Gardens on HBO

I simply do not know  where to start, you just must see this film. I think i am going on my 6th viewing! It is so fascinating the sets, clothes and performances are to die for, you will love it! I am so inspired by the lifestyle shift that they had over the years. Its brilliant when the older woman (Big Edie) is surprised when her niece Jackie O drops in on their mess of a house. She immediately shifts her to the garden and says "are these chairs dirty?" and little Edie puts down paper for them to sit on.No sooner is Big Edie ordering Pâté for her distinguished guest. My big  takeaway moment here is that even while they lived in filth, these women remained fabulous hostesses in their own little ways. So as we live our lives hopefully without tin cans stacked to the ceiling, we can remember to offer guests s little something to eat or drink, and give them a lovely clean place to sit.

Closet Confessions

We all have some skeletons in our closets, for some of us it happens to be our closets themselves. When you open the door do you feel like you should have a helmet on? Or maybe it has been so long since you have seen the floor you don't remember what it looked like... I must admit I have struggled with keeping a tidy closet over the years.  Something finally clicked for me one day, I had just returned from a trip to Chicago where I had bought some new clothes. And when I went to put them in my closet it just didn't feel right, they had come from such a beautiful store and here they were being cast into my less than glamourous closet.  So it hit me, the closet needs to look and feel more like the store, so we got to work.  After years of buying little "organizing products" that don't work I realized that their are basics to buying:

1: If its not strong it wont stay.
2: The way it looks is just as important as
     how it works.
3: Spend more so you buy less often.

So when we went shopping for this extreme closet makeover the options were simply endless, starting at the overwhelming Ikea where I found this perfect piece for for folded clothing like jeans and t's :

It is amazing how much stronger this "book case" is than something manufactured for a closet. We also found these in expensive lights (12.99) that were a breeze to install.

I was so surprised at how bright the white shelving and new lights made the closet look. White is the only color to do a closet in my opinion, because then your clothes take center stage. After it was all put back together again I felt like I was at Bloomingdale's every morning having a little shopping spree. So if your like me and you don't know where to start, take some inspiration from the pro's that put together your favorite stores.

To Dim or not to Dim that really is the question.

When I wake up in the morning the last thing that I want to see is the bright lighting of a bathroom, let alone for dinner at 8pm after a long day. However millions of people across the country live their lives in the same old factory set bright lighting day in and day out, this must stop....TODAY!
May I introduce you to the magnificent lamp dimmer, you simply plug your lamp into this device and instantly you are the controller of your own lighting destiny. All of that for around $10.00. And below we have the light switch dimmer, this will literally change your life, they are very simple to install, however if you are a little weary of the fuze box, simply call a handy friend that will put them in for a case of beer (that is what they drink right?)

It is just really all about the lighting!

As i was flipping through one of the 15 or so magazines that I receive every month, I read something about the soft pink light bulbs that warm the skin tone and soften any room. Well naturally I went on the hunt to find these magnificent bulbs, and its true they really are perfect for dinner parties or any mood lighting in the home.

Easter @ The Ranch

A gorgeous spring afternoon in Southern California was the backdrop to an Easter Luncheon
I just love to set a beautiful table. I honestly believe a gorgeous table setting creates the mood for the event, and certainly lets your guests know that they are in for a treat! I always start with my colors, for this easter i chose silver and pink.
I don't know about you but I am not one to drop a ton of cash on a table setting, particularly for a one day holiday. So I poked around the .99 cents store and found these egg cups 4 for $.99 the only issue, they were orange and yellow....not for long

After a quick coat of "chrome" spray paint they fit easily into my theme. Paint really is the best "bang for your buck" as so many designers say on TV. Please let me know what you think!

Modern Spring Dinner Party

One of easiest ways to make a statement when your entertaining is to set a beautiful table. Many of the tables that I see in magazines are beautiful but they look a little too "done" and generally very feminine. When I was thinking of this dinner I really wanted a very streamlined and modern look, with just the slightest touch of whimsy. This all started with the clementines stacked inside of the hurricane glass and went from there with a monochromatic orange color palate for the flowers from Trader Joe's for $5.99. As I stepped away from the table after putting the white table cloth on I realized it needed something to tie it all together, thats when I went digging in my wrapping station for the navy blue grosgrain ribbon for the center line. As I put out the dishes and silverware I was so excited that the navy blue anchor plates looked amazing in this whole scene. I lit all of the votives moments before the guests arrived and everyone loved it, after all it was 7 guys so I was glad I saved all of the pinks and lavenders for my easter brunch.

The Huntington Gardens

If you are looking to escape the planes trains and automobiles in LA but don't have allot of time or spare cash, then you must visit the exquisite Huntington Library and Gardens
in San Marino, CA. On saturday I was out the door at 8 am to do a clients hair and by 9 I was back at the ranch with no plans, until i got a text from my dear friend David inviting me to tour the gardens. A few texts later and I was in the car to pick up David and his friend from San Francisco. On the way we stopped at Julienne for a quick scone and sandwiches for later, which honestly was worth the drive by itself!

We all made our way down to the cactus gardens and on the way up discovered a beautiful waterfall, thats when I asked myself "am I really only 20 minuites from the city?"
Here I am enjoying one of the beautiful terraces, it seems like their should have been a selection of exotic birds singing to us on that terrace.
If you know me you now that i have a slight obsession with silver, so I was elated to find this amazing collection, complete with a computer that lets you design your own. So all in all this was such a fun surprise getaway that was so close to home, I cannot wait to go back and explore the tea houses and other gardens.
